Bouncing Back
By Greg Hickman
"Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom."
George S. Patton
Sometimes bad
things happen to good people. Like it or not, all of us
are going to face our fair share of adversity from time
to time throughout our lives. It is how we respond to
these make or break moments in life that in large
measure determines the success we get to enjoy.
"It may
sound strange, but many champions are made champions by
setbacks."
Bob Richards
How do you
typically respond when tough times come calling? Do you
see these challenges as opportunities to put your best
to the test or do you view them as invincible foes? Do
you consistently meet life’s stumbling blocks head on,
immediately searching out ways to go around, over or
through them or do you cautiously cower in the corner?
When life
throws you a difficult problem, do you exhibit a
tenacious drive to find the answer or do you instead
look for the easy way out? When you get knocked to your
knees, do you immediately get up and get better or do
you stay down for the count?
"The
block of granite which was an obstacle in the path of
the weak becomes a stepping stone in the path of the
strong."
Thomas Carlyle
Learning how
to bounce back from adversity is the calling card of
champions. While a winner may get knocked down, nothing
can keep an achievement oriented individual down for
very long. And that's the key.
Hey, there is
no disgrace in giving life your best shot and coming up
short on occasion. It happens to the best of us. As a
matter of fact, the majority of the most successful
people on this planet literally failed their way to the
top. They kept getting up and getting better each time
they got knocked down until they got where they were
going. And so should you.
"Adversity causes some men to break, others to break
records."
William A. Ward
Getting
bounced around is simply a part of getting better — as
long as you keep bouncing back. Each and every time you
get knocked down, simply pick yourself up and get back
in the game. Developing a self reliant resiliency, where
you condition yourself to bounce back time after time,
will effectively insulate you from the difficult hands
you’re going to be dealt every so often.
Norman
Vincent Peale, author of the fabulously successful book
The Power of Positive Thinking, had this
to say about overcoming difficult times: "Problems
are to the mind what exercise is to the muscles, they
toughen and make strong."
When those
tough times come your way, never forget that you are
tougher than anything life can hurl your direction.
Always remember that you were blessed with a
indefatigable heart, a super powerful, supercharged
dynamo that can plow through even the toughest of times.
When Dr. Robert Schuller said, "Tough times never
last, but tough people do," he was talking to you.
When you keep
bouncing back, you’ll soon find yourself bouncing all
the way to the top.
The Bottom
Line: When you keep bouncing back from adversity,
life's setbacks ultimately pave the way for your
comeback.
