Loving What You Do

By Greg Hickman

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive."
Harold Whitman

How many times have you heard someone stroll into work on Monday morning and enthusiastically shout for one and all to hear, "Thank goodness, it’s Monday!" You could more than likely count these rare occasions on one hand, maybe even on one finger. Maybe not at all.

On the other hand, you’ve probably seen more people than you can count shuffle in the door with a bad case of the Monday blues. These people, who show very little enthusiasm for their job (or their life for that matter, commence their countdown to Friday as soon as they walk in the office. What’s wrong with this picture?

"Look for an occupation that you like, and you will not need to labor for a single day in your life."
Confucius

The feelings you hold for Monday morning say a lot about you. If you’re full of fire and ready to let it rip — chances are great that you have already discovered your niche in life. You love your life, love what you do and can barely wait to get the new week off to a blazing start. If, on the other hand, you can barely get your rear in gear when Monday morning rolls around, chances are good that you need to stop doing what you’re doing (since you’re probably not doing it all that well anyway) and start listening your heart.

"There are two great days in a person's life — the day we are born and the day we discover why."
William Barclay

Each of us hold inside ourselves a song that desperately needs to be sung. True happiness, that peaceful feeling of contentment and tranquillity that can only be derived when you love life and love what you do each and every day, comes from singing this song and following your heart. How about you? Are you singing your song? Are you following your heart?

If not, isn’t it about time that you made some exciting changes in your life? How would it feel to truly love what you do for a living? Can you imagine yourself jumping for joy when Monday morning rolls around? Could you handle getting paid to do what you already love to do — and cashing one big check after another?

The very best have followed their heart and fashioned their life adventure around those things they love to do. And because they love doing it, they do it very well and as a result, they get paid exceptionally well for doing it. They have learned how to turn their play days into their pay days. And so can you.

"Love what you do. Do what you love."
Wayne Dyer

You can start by assessing your talents. Write down in meticulous detail the things you love so much that you would do them for free — and then look for ways to convert these avocations into your occupation. Whatever you do, don’t say it can’t be done — because it can. As a matter of fact, this is precisely the game plan the best of the very best have followed for years — and so can you.

I heartily encourage you to get busy doing what you love to do, making sure that you do it with all the purpose and passion you can muster. Don’t hold anything back, give it everything you’ve got … and more. You should throw your entire heart and soul into the effort — masterfully painting a portrait of excellence with each and every stroke you make. While it may not happen overnight, the world will soon recognize your outstanding effort and reward you accordingly.

The Bottom Line: You’ll find that it’s easy to do your best when you’re doing something you love.
