Expect a
Miracle
By Greg Hickman
"Miracles happen to those who believe in them."
Bernhard Berenson
A few years back, I was one of a number
of speakers at a motivational program held on a college
campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The program was held in the
university’s basketball arena, with the stage set over
the covered basketball floor. As I silently awaited my
turn on the platform, behind the stage and out of the
view of the audience, a magical moment occurred in my
life.
I noticed a small portion of one end of
the court had been left uncovered. On that exposed piece
of basketball hardwood, a simple yet powerful message
was painted. I read the message and immediately felt
physically and emotionally moved. The message simply
said EXPECT A MIRACLE.
The message didn’t say hope
or wish for a miracle. No, the emphatic
message emblazoned upon the floor boldly proclaimed
EXPECT A MIRACLE.
"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
I thought to myself, "What a thrilling
way to live life!" Rather than fearing the worst, I
could energetically channel my energies towards
expecting the best from life. Instead of worrying and
fretting about all sorts of potential problems that
could come to pass, I could boldly throw my heart and
soul into a wide array of exciting adventures and
pursuits. In short, I could EXPECT A MIRACLE
to occur.
I excitedly considered the
possibilities. What kind of life could I fashion if I
expected a miracle to occur every day of my life? How
far could I go — and how much could I grow — if I
approached my life with such great expectations? How
much more fun and fulfillment could I enjoy if I
envisioned each day as a miraculous gift from God? I
took that EXPECT A MIRACLE mindset home
with me that day.
"There are two ways to live your life. One is as
though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though
everything is a miracle."
Albert Einstein
It took some work, and while I certainly
don’t have it down pat even now, I do look for miracles
in my every day life. I have come to understand that we
have to pitch in and do our part to bring about these
miraculous moments. Our great expectations, when
constantly coupled up with even greater effort and
commitment, invariably lead to miraculous results.
Now, whenever life deals me a
particularly bitter blow and I’m tempted to give up or
give in, I mentally move myself back to that fateful day
behind the stage when those three little words
forcefully stirred my soul. Instead of wallowing in a
sea of self doubt and worry, I EXPECT A MIRACLE
once again. And so should you.
The Bottom Line: When you learn
to expect a miracle — you’ll soon be living a miraculous
life.
