Overcoming Overwhelm
By Greg Hickman
We have all been confronted with that
all too familiar, extremely uncomfortable feeling of
being totally overwhelmed by situations and
circumstances in our lives. We know how unpleasant it
feels when there is just too much for us to handle.
During these unsettling moments of self doubt, there
just seems to be too much of this and too much of that,
in fact, it feels as though there is too much of
everything. You start feeling completely overwhelmed and
begin to totally shut down.
It seems like these unsettling feelings
of overwhelm just sit and wait for their chance to catch
you off guard or off balance. Then when you are at your
most vulnerable and the timing is right (or should I say
"wrong"), they suddenly bowl you over and overpower you.
Whenever overwhelm attacks, it attempts
to confuse and confound, looking to shut you down and
paralyze your ability to cope. You are immediately
overrun with a profound sense of self doubt and start
questioning yourself and your abilities.
Feeling overwhelmed touches off a number
of self defeating feelings as well. You feel
nervous. You feel tense. You feel rattled.
Just when you need to believe in yourself the most, it
feels as though your self reliance has completely
deserted you. During these make or break moments, you
must remind yourself that this overwhelming emotion is
something you feel -- and you can control your
feelings. Whenever you want to overcome these feelings
of overwhelm, you need to simply change the way you
feel.
You need to believe in yourself –
because you do have more than enough tenacity to
overpower any and all adversities tossed in your path.
You need to believe in your abilities – because you do
have more God given talent than you will ever need. The
key to overcoming overwhelm is controlling your thoughts
and emotions.
Whenever doubts of any kind start
creeping in, winners deny them and so should you. You
should never allow negative feelings of any sort to gain
a foothold in your life. If you focus on the problems
that are attempting to overwhelm you, the feeling of
overwhelm will be reinforced – getting bigger and
growing stronger with each passing moment.
Unfortunately, way too many people give in or give up
when they feel overwhelmed. Winners instead choose to
harness their strength and focus their attention on
finding the answers to the problems they encounter.
When you choose to deny your doubts and
zero in on finding the needed solutions, you'll find the
answers you need … and a whole lot more. You can
overcome any feelings of overwhelm by controlling the
way you feel. There is no question that
feeling self assured and self confident sure beats the
heck out of feeling overwhelmed.
At the first sign of trouble, remember
to channel all of your energy on making good things
happen. By staying positive, staying focused and looking
for the answers rather than allowing your emotions to
get the best of you, you can effectively overcome
overwhelm. Then, instead of being overwhelmed with
adversity, you'll soon find yourself overwhelmed
with good feelings instead.
