Reservations Never Required

By Greg Hickman

“Happiness is essentially a state of going somewhere wholeheartedly, one-directionally, without regret or reservation."
W. H. Sheldon

Can there be a better feeling on earth than when one is blissfully lost in the passionate pursuit of his or her dreams, living an almost fairy tale life literally overflowing with happiness and good cheer? If you have ever been there, with the wind at your back and seemingly on an unstoppable roll, you know how great it feels to be fully energized and ready to take on the world.

At these times, you know and I mean you really know that you are going to make your dreams come true right before your very eyes — not even one if, and or but threatening to rain on your parade. No doubts to cloud your vision, no uncertainties to spoil your day. You know where you are going and absolutely nothing is going to stand in your way. Today is going to be a super sensational day, you just know it.

“Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we might win, by fearing to attempt.”
William Shakespeare

Then there are those other occasions that we don’t like to think about, let alone live. These not so fabulous moments occur when doubt and uncertainty, a double trouble tandem if there ever was one, creep in and gain a foothold, throwing a monkey wrench into our game plans. Instead of cruising towards the fulfillment of our hopes and dreams, living life in the fast lane, we find ourselves knocked completely off track, out of kilter and more likely than not, out of bounds as well. Rather than feeling confident and self assured, we feel like our whole world has been turned upside down.

If you get knocked down often enough, sooner or later it is only natural to lose a little of your ‘edge,’ that spirited eagerness to take a risk that separates the winners from everyone else. You begin wondering how something that was going so good could all of a sudden be going so bad. Then, instead of giving it your all, you start holding something back. Before long, you stop trying altogether. And that’s not a pretty picture.

“Faith is not belief without proof, but trust without reservation.”
Elton Trueblood

iving a life without reservations is never as easy as we wish it could be. Letting go of the doubts, uncertainties and fears that haunt us and hold us back becomes doubly difficult whenever we hit those inevitable bumps in the road that we all encounter from time to time. At these very moments, when everything outside of us tells us to give up or give in, we must listen closely to what we hear from within. It’s that invincible voice of inner courage and strength that tells us to keep the faith — and keep working towards the attainment of our goals.

Unlike those swanky five star restaurants where having a reservation is an absolute must if you are going to be seated at dinner time; having any type of reservation in life can spell big time trouble. In our most trying of times, when we begin loosing our grip on faith, we need to hold on and keep hanging in there until the skies clear once again. And clear they will if you will just keep the faith — in yourself and your God given abilities.

“Don't waste life in doubts and fears; spend yourself on the work before you, well assured that the right performance of this hour's duties will be the best preparation for the hours and ages that will follow it.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Franklin Delano Roosevelt once said, “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” And it is these doubts that we need to purge from our systems once and for all. By relentlessly focusing your time and talents on those things you wish to accomplish and achieve, paying no heed whatsoever to those nagging doubts that seek to throttle your exuberance and enthusiasm for living, you CAN make a world of difference in your life and the lives of those around you as well.

Once you develop that sense of certainty that comes with staunchly believing in yourself and your immense potential, the sky becomes the limit. At that precise moment when all those reservations that have kept you ‘in your place’ for way too long are finally tossed aside for good, anything and everything you have ever imagined yourself doing, having or being are suddenly well within your reach.

Why choose to live a life hampered by worries, doubts and fears when your life can be so much better; in fact, better than you have ever imagined it could be? When you commit to doing the best you can each and every day, you’ll discover that the rest will take care of itself. Forget the reservations, your table is waiting.

The Bottom Line: The only reservation you will ever need is that spot at the top set aside just for you.
