Step by Step

“There is no one giant step that does it. It's a lot of little steps.”
Peter A. Cohen

It has often been said that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Maybe it is and then again, maybe it isn’t. After all, sometimes the greenest grass around can be found on our side of the fence. But in either case, why do so many people remain right where they are today, content to simply gaze at the lush turf in the distance instead of taking off their shoes and stepping out into the plush playground that beckons just beyond?

Instead of playfully frolicking in the soft, cool grass of the stunning meadow like setting just a few steps away, they choose to do nothing, standing and staring while dreaming of their childhood days when playing in the park was the name of the game. Why don’t they simply hop the fence, kick up their heels and have the time of their lives on the beautiful grass, rekindling that childlike enthusiasm that made their lives so very special back then? More often than not, it’s taking that first step that stops people stone cold in their tracks. So they end up gazing and gawking at the good life instead of living it.

“The elevator to success is out of order. You'll have to use the stairs... one step at a time.”
Joe Girard

There’s an old saying that goes: “He who is outside the door has the hardest part of the journey behind him.” And it’s that taking of that first step, doing something completely different from what we’re used to doing, which terrifies some people right to the bone. Yet take that first step we must if we ever want to make our lives come alive with the kind of passion and fervor that can literally set us ablaze with an enthusiastic zeal for living.

Few can argue that our lives will eventually become quite ordinary if we stand in the same place all the time. And an ordinary life is hardly a life worth living, wouldn’t you agree? After all, there’s nothing extraordinary about being ordinary.

If our lives are to become everything we have ever hoped and dreamed they could be, rich and rewarding lives that can take us anywhere we’ve ever imagined, we’re going to have to step away from the present and step out into the new, unexplored, uncharted territory… and keep stepping.

“Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps, down new roads, armed with nothing but their own vision.”
Ayn Rand

Rather than cower and back away when difficulties arrive on the scene, as they surely will as you make your way to the top, you need to step up to the plate and take these challenges on without doubt or hesitation. You need to keep your attention clearly focused on your goals, finding a way to take those obstacles and stumbling blocks that attempt to obstruct your path and convert them into stepping stones.

Why should you allow life’s troubles and tribulations any opportunity whatsoever to keep you from striding into that breath taking future just over the horizon or just around the bend? You shouldn’t and you won’t. By zeroing in on where you want to go and then taking the needed steps to get you there, you’ll soon find yourself sinking your feet into the coolest and crispest grass you have ever felt.

“What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step.”
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

John Wanamaker said, “One may walk over the highest mountain one step at a time.” Ah yes, one step at a time. The longest of journeys always begins with that initial single step — followed up by another and then another.

Isn’t it about time that you confidently stepped up, stepped out and stepped away from the past? Aren’t you ready to step it up so that you can step into the future that has been your destiny since birth?

Why waste a minute longer aimlessly staring at the greener grass that others enjoy daily, wishing those good times and great adventures could be yours? Why not boldly take that first step today and then keep stepping higher, farther and faster with each and every step you take? If you will just take that first few steps and keep stepping, then before you know it, you’ll be living life with more purpose and passion than you’ve ever imagined, walking amongst the clouds.

The Bottom Line: Fulfilling your date with destiny begins with a single step.
