Wish Upon
A Star
By Greg Hickman
"Some people develop a wishbone where their
backbone should be."
Unknown Author
How many moments have you spent wishing
for all sorts of things to come true? Probably way more
than you can ever count. If you’re like most of us,
rarely does a day go by that you don’t wish you had this
or wish you had that — or wish you had both this and
that. Sometimes our wish list gets pretty long. Hey,
there’s nothing wrong with wishing for things in your
life. After all, you were born to dream, weren’t you?
You bet. And if you can dream, why wouldn’t you and
shouldn’t you wish for these dreams to come true?
But more often than not, there is
probably a lot more wishing going on than effort being
expended on converting these dreams into reality.
Wishing and not doing can frustrate and confuse you,
leaving you feeling empty and unhappy. Wishing and not
acting will never get you one step closer to fulfilling
your potential or living the life you desire and
deserve.
"To accomplish great things, we must not only act,
but also dream; not only plan, but also believe."
Anatole France
Regardless of whether we realize it or
not, we waste a lot of wishes on things we don’t
necessarily need or want. Oh sure, we think we need
them; we're convinced we want them. But do we really?
For example, how many of us have wished it was Friday
afternoon on Monday morning? Monday morning for crying
out loud! Before we can get another exciting week kick
started, some of us wish it was already over. How in the
world can we ever expect our lives to get better if
we’re willing to wish our lives away?
If you’re going to wish, why not make
these wishes count for something truly special? Wishing
you would have said this and wishing you would have done
that, after you’ve said or done them, isn’t going to do
you too much good. And wishing to be smarter, younger or
more talented in many instances prevents you from seeing
and using the God given gifts you already possess.
"You are never given a wish without also being
given the power to make it come true. You may have to
work for it, however."
Richard Bach
We do a lot of wishful thinking because
wishing is a fairly easy task. You don’t really have to
do much of anything or commit to much of anything to
make a wish. As a result, we wish here, we wish there —
we wish and wish almost everywhere. We wish we may, we
wish we might — we wish and wish with all our might. Far
too often there’s too much wishing and too little doing
going on.
If you’re going to make a wish, then
make it a good one. And then do something about it. The
key is to wish for things that are consistent with your
dreams and immeasurably enhance the quality of your life
— and then get busy making these dreams come alive. Why
waste another minute wishing your life away or settling
for a second rate lifestyle where you only wish but
never act? Why not make certain that everytime you make
a wish, you back it up with immediate action and MAKE
IT HAPPEN?
Robert Schuller said, "Build a dream and
the dream will build you." It’s time to get busy
dreaming big dreams, bold dreams, dreams filled with
passion and purpose — and then get even busier doing
them. Then instead of simply wishing and waiting, why
not roll up your sleeves and get to work? By replacing
that wishbone with some backbone, your dreams will
indeed build you.
The Bottom Line: Don't just wish
upon a star — make sure you work on making those wishes
come true.
